The story its self revolves around the Blackwood family home, situated in a small (and small minded, the story shows) suburban village in America. The protagonist, ‘Merricat’ invites you into the story with an open yet worrying welcome- “I like my sister Constance, and Richard Plantagenet, and Amanita Phalloides, the death cap mushroom. There are many ways of looking at this book.ĭespite the seeming seriousness, I assure you that it is a very readable novel. It could also be read as a story which explores the harm of psychological trauma. Another person may read it as a polemic to small minded societies. On one hand, it is a domestic horror, showcasing the life of a dysfunctional family. It’s a rich book, and I could interpret it from many angles. This becomes a matter of fact when one approaches Shirley Jackson’s We Have Always Lived in the Castle. Sometimes the greatest horror is actually real life.

This month’s book is The Sweetness of Water by Nathan Harris. Are you looking to connect with others? Do you love reading all kinds of books? If you answered yes, the Community Book Club is for you! It takes into account things like freedom and responsibility as well as other important aspects of life such as love and death. The Ethics of Ambiguity provides guidance on what choices to make and how to act. In short, we make our own lives by making choices. To understand this book’s significance in the larger conversation about existentialism (the idea that existence precedes essence), it is crucial to understand a key assumption of existentialist thought: that humans create their own meaning through choices and actions. In The Ethics of Ambiguity, Sartre grapples with classic philosophical concepts: freedom, choice, human responsibility and the meaning of life. This essay builds upon Jean-Paul Sartre’s Of Being and Nothingness which ended by promising to develop an ethical system based on existentialism principles. Freedom is the most important thing to an existentialist and this freedom comes with ethical responsibilities. Published in 1948 after World War II, The Ethics of Ambiguity outlines a practical system of ethics. 1-Page Summary of The Ethics of Ambiguity Overall Summary Her lust for a shiny red ribbon leads her to a life of prostitution at a young age, where she encounters a freedom unknown to virtuous young women. So hunger is not the worst thing about being poor.Īnd now Im sure youre asking, Okay, okay, Mr. And believe me, a good piece of chicken can make anybody believe in God. My mother would say, “Well, what it’s about, Bruce, is goodness and fairness.” But what I saw were church people leaving their shops – where they were screwing people for every dollar – and going to church and being sanctified. He is reserved and charming, dedicated to his family, his writing and his goal of re-educating Australians about our history. The opportunities available for 70-year-old men are much overstated. Do you care to correct the record? I could relieve them of their ignorance. When you say, “It still is”, a lot of people, probably unfairly, don’t associate people in their 70s with sexuality. I had this opportunity to watch, think and wonder. It gave me the opportunity to watch and care, and to look for people who had a good heart. Not being a popular male to women didn’t hurt me at all. Why do you say that? Because it hasn’t done me any harm. If you could go back in time and give a younger version of yourself a pep talk, what would you tell that younger self about romance, sex, beauty and women? Wait.
